Sources have informed BOUNCE876.COM that incarcerated dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel’s upcoming appeal preparation could cost in “excess of 25 million”.
“Given the number of attorneys for whom fees were being claimed, the hourly rates claimed for the attorneys, and the retainer, the sum could be well over 20 million to begin with. The registrar typically allows hourly rates of $30,000.00 for certain high profile lawyers and $8,000.00 for junior counsel, and sometimes retainer fees can amount to over $5 million. Kartel’s case is complex and the defence would have to hire a team of junior lawyers to go through the evidence meticulously to come up with inconsistencies to show the learned judges in the Court of Appeal. I believe that 25 million is a conservative figure,” a lawyer who spoke on condition of anonymity, told BOUNCE876.COM
The Court of Appeal is set to hear the case of incarcerated dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel and his co-accused on February 19 next year. The deejay Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer was convicted alongside Kahira Jones, Andre St John, and entertainer Shawn “Shawn Storm” Campbell.
He and his three co-accused were granted leave to appeal their conviction and sentence in the Court of Appeal in March of this year.
The four were given life sentences at the Home Circuit Court in Kingston in March 2014 for involvement in the murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams.
Kartel will be eligible for parole after 35 years. He is currently at the Tower Street Adult Correctional Facility in Kingston.
His co-accused St John will do 30 years before being considered for parole. Jones and Campbell are to serve 25 years before they are eligible for parole.
