You might remember dancehall artiste Kemmikal from his brilliantly written single, Me and Poor Nah Par, last year. But now, he is scorching the airwaves again with the single, Love She Want, which has become a fast favourite of several local disc jockeys impressed by the red hot rookie’s wordplay and street metaphors.
The video has been getting heavy rotation on CVM, and HYPE TV, a sign of his growing street credibility.
The talented young deejay also has a number of sizzling new singles such as Love She Want, Love You Too and Fresh to Death on the Audacity riddim.
“The streets dem love the Hard We go and the ‘Fresh to Death’ because of the lyrical wordplay and chorus, I plan to do a video for it later this year. Ah Red Square mi ting de,” he said in a release.
Born Kemar Bennett on November 19, 1986, Kemmikal grew up in the war-torn inner city community of Dunkirk in Kingston. After graduating from Calabar All Age School, he passed the Common Entrance Exam in 1997, and began to attend the prominent high school, Kingston College. During his youth days, he was influenced by artistes such as Spragga Benz and Assassin.
“These are two outstanding musicians played a vital role in my choice to become a deejay. They came from my community, and I watched them living out their dreams through music and letting their voices being heard in their lyrics,” he said.
Kemmikal began to showcase his talent at school events such as sports day, class parties and also at community talent shows, and he began to carve out a reputation as a talented word smith. However, he emigrated to the USA in the year 2001.
Undaunted by his change in geography, he simply redoubled his efforts.
“I just managed my time, juggling school and music, I want to become a top artiste on the international scene,” he said.
A talented singer/deejay/composer, Kemmikal bases his music on his life experiences, and his music is infused with an infectious mix of dancehall, reggae and R & B.
During his numerous trips to Jamaica, he has forged alliances with popular producers such as Ricardo ‘RedBoom’ Reid, Riff Raff from Notice Productions and more. Kemmikal strongly believes that he has gained experience and that his music will mature to a point that will take him to the next level.
“I never limit myself, I always challenge myself to different things. My biggest dream is to take music to a place where no other artiste has ever gone and to be an inspiration to others the way so many others have inspired me,” he said.
