Social commentary is a lost art in dancehall, but dancehall star Masicka believes that art can be used to incite social action. He has teamed up with Delus to record a single, ‘Life Keeps On Crying’, a tribute to Mario Deane, the murdered young man who died in a police lockup and who has become a poster boy for human rights organisation’s rallying cry against police brutality.
“I was motivated to do the song because I felt it was very tragic and unjust for a man to lose his life over a spliff when governments all over the world, and even Jamaican government, are moving to legalize the tree of life, marijuana,” he said.
Masicka wants justice for the family of Mario Deane, and hopes that the song, released on the Razzle Music/Subkonshus Music imprint, will hope to keep pressure on the government to act.
