Canadian independent music company IsRoyal Records, in collaboration with Jamaican-born reggae artist Semojrah Naki, recently released a song entitled ‘Warriors Don’t Cry’ to much critical acclaim in the reggae community.
Produced by Toronto born producer Dada Supreme who composed the riddim with guidance from Winston “Axe” Perry, the song has an international feel and message which has triggered positive feedback since its release.
Since its release on VEVO, the video has racked up thousands of views, and the song has also been released on a number of digital and media outlets all across Jamaica.
“The label is currently on a city wide promo tour with me and we’re gaining more recognition and real positive feedback. We’re just building more stage confidence when we’re ready to take on the world,” Semojrah Naki said.
The response in Jamaica has been favourable as the song has been added to the playlist of two major radio stations.
“This is the first of many projects to be released from the duo,” Dev Daulton, a representative of IsRoyal Records, said.
In the meantime, Semojrah Naki is looking to crank up promotion in reggae circles as he drives home his message.
“We as a people have been through it all, our tears are all dried up and there is nothing more to do but stay strong and wise,” he said.
Born in parish of St. Catherine, Jamaica, he grew up with his grandmother in the parish of Clarendon while his mother lived in Kingston. He returned to the city at age 6, and eventually attended Kingston College where his love for music was ignited.
After converting to Rastafari, he read ancient texts and changed his name to ‘Semojrah Naki‘, which means a warrior, a name which stemmed from his daily routine of reading and reasoning with brethrens. He was an instrumental member of Anunaki Warriors, a group which also formed its own sound system called Anunaki Supreme in Three West Greater Portmore.
He gained experience performing on talent shows, then in 2008, Semojrah Naki migrated to Toronto, Canada, where he currently resides and continues to work on mastering his material.
“I am looking to return to Jamaica this April to promote another single,” he said.
