An accused man who reportedly collected money for a road licence appeared in the Spanish Town RM Court recently.

In 2009, Carol Campbell, and her husband who owns a coaster bus, paid Carl Campbell $270,000 for a road licence. The licence was produced in March 2010.

However, after the expiry date a sum of $230,000 was paid to the said accused for renewal.

It was outlined that the bus was loading in Downtown, Kingston when police personnel along with Transport Authority were conducting a search and it was observed that the road licence which bore the name and signature of the director Daniel Dawes was fictitious and was never issued by the Transport Authority.

Senior RM Lyle Armstrong asked Lenard Green, who represented Campbell, if his client went to primary school.

“I believe he did but I can enquire if you wish your honour,” Green responded.

“Well, I went to primary school and learnt that the days of the week are Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. And that seven days make one week. So can you tell me why the condition of your client bail is that he reports daily and why he only reports five days?” the judge enquired.

Campbell’s response suggested that he understood ‘daily’ to mean Monday to Friday. This was not accepted and he was warned that if he failed to comply with the conditions of his bail, then it would be revoked.
